## The Deity of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is not merely a prophet, teacher, or moral example. He is God the Son who came in the flesh.

Every person must eventually answer the question Jesus asked His disciples: “Whom say ye that I am?” The Christian faith stands or falls upon the answer.

Some call Jesus a prophet. Others describe Him as a wise teacher, social reformer, miracle worker, or religious leader. Islam honors Him as a prophet while denying that He is the Son of God. Other religious movements claim He was the first being God created. Modern culture often reduces Him to a harmless symbol of acceptance who never confronts sin or demands obedience.

Scripture allows none of these reductions. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He existed before His birth in Bethlehem, possesses the fullness of deity, became truly human without ceasing to be God, died for sinners, and rose bodily from the grave. He is not one path among many. He is Lord over all.

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”[[/quote]]

## Jesus Existed Before Bethlehem

The life of Jesus did not begin when Mary gave birth to Him. His human life began in Bethlehem, but the Son Himself is eternal.

John opens his Gospel by identifying Jesus as the eternal Word:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”[[/quote]]

John 1:1, KJV

The Word already existed “in the beginning.” He did not come into existence at creation because all creation came into existence through Him.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”[[/quote]]

John 1:3, KJV

Everything that was made was made through Christ. Therefore, Christ cannot belong to the category of created things. He is the Creator.

Jesus spoke of the glory He possessed with the Father before the world existed:

“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”[[/quote]]

John 17:5, KJV

Jesus was not claiming that He had merely existed in God’s thoughts. He spoke of a glory He personally shared with the Father before creation. The Son is eternal.

## The Eternal Son Became Man

The eternal Word entered His creation and took upon Himself a genuine human nature.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”[[/quote]]

John 1:14, KJV

Jesus did not merely appear human. He was born, grew, became hungry, experienced weariness, suffered pain, and died. He possessed a real human body and a real human nature. Yet He did not stop being God when He became man.

The incarnation means that God the Son took humanity upon Himself. His deity was not exchanged for humanity, and the two were not blended into something that was neither God nor man. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, one Person possessing both a divine nature and a human nature.

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”[[/quote]]

Philippians 2:7, KJV

When Scripture says that Christ made Himself “of no reputation,” it does not mean that He surrendered His deity. God cannot cease to be God. The Son humbled Himself by taking the form of a servant and entering the world He had created. The King came among His rebellious subjects, not wearing earthly splendor, but clothed in human flesh.

## Jesus Bears the Names of God

Scripture does not hesitate to call Jesus God.

After seeing the risen Christ, Thomas declared:

“My Lord and my God.”[[/quote]]

John 20:28, KJV

Jesus did not rebuke Thomas. He accepted his confession because Thomas had spoken the truth.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”[[/quote]]

Titus 2:13, KJV

The Father also addresses the Son as God:

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.”[[/quote]]

Hebrews 1:8, KJV

Jesus is not called God because He resembles God or represents God more closely than anyone else. He is God by nature.

## Jesus Used the Divine Name

When religious leaders challenged Jesus concerning Abraham, He answered:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”[[/quote]]

John 8:58, KJV

Jesus did not merely say, “Before Abraham was, I existed.” He said, “I am,” using language that pointed directly to the name by which God revealed Himself to Moses.

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM.”[[/quote]]

Exodus 3:14, KJV

The people listening to Jesus understood the weight of His claim. They picked up stones to kill Him because they believed He had committed blasphemy. They did not misunderstand Him. They rejected what He had said about Himself.

On another occasion Jesus declared:

“I and my Father are one.”[[/quote]]

John 10:30, KJV

Again, the religious leaders attempted to stone Him. They explained why:

“For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”[[/quote]]

John 10:33, KJV

The claim that Jesus never presented Himself as God cannot survive an honest reading of the Gospel accounts. His enemies knew what He was claiming. The question was whether they would believe Him.

## Jesus Possesses the Attributes of God

Scripture attributes to Jesus qualities that belong to God alone.

Jesus is eternal:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”[[/quote]]

Hebrews 13:8, KJV

He is present with His people everywhere:

“And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”[[/quote]]

Matthew 28:20, KJV

He knows what is within the human heart:

“But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.”[[/quote]]

John 2:24–25, KJV

He has authority over creation, sickness, demons, death, and judgment. The wind obeyed Him. Disease departed at His command. Demons recognized His authority. The dead returned to life when He spoke. These were not empty displays of power. They revealed who He is.

## Jesus Forgives Sin

When a paralyzed man was brought before Jesus, Christ first addressed the man’s deepest problem:

“Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”[[/quote]]

The scribes immediately recognized the significance of His words:

“Who can forgive sins but God only?”[[/quote]]

Mark 2:7, KJV

Their basic conclusion was correct. Sin is ultimately committed against God, and only God possesses the authority to forgive it. Jesus then healed the man to demonstrate that He possessed the authority He claimed.

Jesus did not say that God might forgive the man at some later time. He forgave him directly. Christ possesses the authority of God because He is God the Son.

## Jesus Receives Worship

Faithful servants of God refuse worship. When Cornelius fell at Peter’s feet, Peter told him to stand because he was only a man. When John attempted to worship an angel, the angel stopped him and commanded him to worship God.

Jesus repeatedly received worship.

After Jesus walked on the sea and calmed the wind, His disciples responded:

“Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.”[[/quote]]

Matthew 14:33, KJV

After His resurrection, His followers again worshipped Him:

“And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.”[[/quote]]

Luke 24:52, KJV

If Jesus were merely a prophet or angel, accepting worship would have been sinful. He received worship because He is worthy of it.

## Jesus Is Equal With the Father

Jesus is God the Son, but He is not God the Father. The Father and Son are distinct Persons within the one God. The Son speaks to the Father, is sent by the Father, and willingly submits Himself to the Father’s will.

This willing submission does not make the Son less divine. During His earthly ministry, Christ humbled Himself and carried out the work the Father sent Him to accomplish. Submission in role does not mean inferiority in nature.

“That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.”[[/quote]]

John 5:23, KJV

Jesus demands the same honor that belongs to the Father. Scripture does not permit us to claim that we honor God while dishonoring His Son.

“He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.”[[/quote]]

John 5:23, KJV

## Jesus Is Fully God and Fully Man

The deity of Christ must not be defended by denying His humanity. Jesus is not half God and half man. He is fully God and fully man.

As man, He could stand in our place. He could experience temptation, suffering, rejection, and death. As God, His sacrifice possessed infinite worth and could satisfy the judgment against sin. He is the perfect Mediator because He truly represents both God and humanity.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”[[/quote]]

1 Timothy 2:5, KJV

Jesus faced genuine temptation, yet He never sinned.

“But was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”[[/quote]]

Hebrews 4:15, KJV

His sinlessness was essential. A sinful savior would need salvation himself. Jesus could bear our sins because He had no sin of His own.

## Why the Deity of Christ Matters

The deity of Christ is not an optional doctrine that Christians may disagree about without consequence. If Jesus is not God, Christianity is false.

If Jesus were a created being, worshipping Him would be idolatry. If He were merely human, His death could not provide the sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the world. If He were only a prophet, His claim to forgive sins would be blasphemous. If He were not God, His promise of eternal life would carry no greater authority than the promise of any other dying man.

But Jesus is God. The blood shed at Calvary was the blood of the incarnate Son. The One who died was the Author of life. Death could not hold Him, and the grave could not claim Him.

“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.”[[/quote]]

## False Christs Cannot Save

Many people say they believe in Jesus while rejecting what Scripture reveals about Him. The name alone is not enough. A Jesus who is only a prophet is not the Jesus of the Bible. A Jesus who was created by God is not the eternal Son. A Jesus who excuses sin and never calls anyone to repentance is a product of human imagination.

Paul warned that people could be deceived into accepting “another Jesus.”

“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached… ye might well bear with him.”[[/quote]]

2 Corinthians 11:4, KJV

Islam speaks respectfully of Jesus while denying His deity, crucifixion, and Sonship. Respectful language cannot repair those denials. A religion that rejects the identity and saving work of Christ cannot lead anyone to the Father.

Religious movements that reduce Jesus to an angel, created spirit, or lesser god commit the same fatal error. They use His name while denying His nature. The real Jesus is the eternal Creator, God manifested in the flesh, crucified for sinners and risen from the dead.

“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”[[/quote]]

## Jesus Is the Only Way to the Father

Because Jesus is God the Son who became man and gave Himself for sinners, He alone can reconcile us to God.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”[[/quote]]

John 14:6, KJV

Jesus did not claim to show us one possible way. He said that He is the way. He did not say that religious sincerity, moral effort, church attendance, Islam, Hinduism, or personal spirituality could bring someone to the Father. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

That claim offends a culture that treats all religious beliefs as equally true. Contradictory claims cannot all be true. Jesus either is who He said He is, or He is not. If He is the eternal Son of God who conquered death, then His words carry absolute authority.

## What Will You Do With Jesus?

Knowing facts about Jesus is not the same as trusting Him. You may believe that He existed, admire His teachings, celebrate Christmas, attend church, and still remain lost in your sin.

The Bible says:

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”[[/quote]]

Romans 3:23, KJV

You have sinned against the holy God who created you. Your good works cannot erase your guilt. Religion cannot make you righteous. You need a Savior.

Jesus Christ came to save sinners. He lived the sinless life you could not live, died under the judgment your sins deserved, and rose from the grave. Salvation is not earned. It is received through repentance and faith in Him.

Recognize that you are a sinner in need of God’s grace. Admit that you cannot save yourself. Believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, that He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead. Ask Christ to forgive your sins, come into your heart, and save you. Turn from your sin and place your faith in Him as Lord and Savior.

You may pray:

Lord Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner and need Your grace. I believe that You are God the Son, that You died on the cross for my sins, and that You rose from the dead. Please forgive my sins, come into my heart, and save me. I turn from my sin and place my faith in You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

The prayer itself is not a formula that forces God to save. Christ saves those who come to Him with genuine repentance and faith.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”[[/quote]]

Romans 10:9, KJV

Jesus Christ is more than a teacher. He is more than a prophet. He is not a created being or one religious option among many. He is God the Son, the Lord of creation, the Savior of sinners, and the coming Judge.

Every person will answer the question: “Whom say ye that I am?” Your answer will determine more than your religious beliefs. It will reveal whether you have life in Christ or remain separated from God.
