## What Is the Trinity?

The Trinity is one of the central doctrines of the Christian faith. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Christians do not believe in three gods. We believe in one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Each Person is fully God. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost is not the Father. Yet they are not separate gods competing with one another. They are one God.

The word Trinity does not appear in the Bible, but the truth it describes is found throughout Scripture. The word gives us a way to speak about everything the Bible reveals concerning the oneness of God and the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Christians did not invent the Trinity to make God more complicated. The doctrine exists because Scripture will not allow us to deny either that there is one God or that three distinct Persons are called God.

## There Is Only One God

The foundation of the doctrine is the absolute oneness of God. Christianity is not polytheistic. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, Scripture declares that there is one true and living God.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”[[/quote]]

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.”[[/quote]]

Isaiah 45:5, KJV

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost do not divide God into three parts. God is not one-third Father, one-third Son, and one-third Holy Ghost. Each Person possesses the fullness of the divine nature. There is one divine Being, not three.

This distinction matters because careless language can lead people into believing something Scripture does not teach. Christians do not worship a committee of gods. We worship the one eternal God who has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

## The Father Is God

Scripture repeatedly identifies the Father as God. Jesus prayed to the Father, submitted to the Father’s will, and spoke of the glory He shared with the Father before the world existed.

“Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.”[[/quote]]

2 John 3, KJV

The Father sent the Son into the world for our salvation. He did not become the Father when Jesus was born. He has eternally been the Father, just as the Son has eternally been the Son. Their relationship did not begin in Bethlehem.

## The Son Is God

Jesus Christ is not a created being, a lesser god, or merely a great prophet. He is God the Son, eternally existing with the Father. John begins his Gospel by declaring both that the Word was with God and that the Word was God.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”[[/quote]]

The Word later took on human flesh:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”[[/quote]]

John 1:14, KJV

Jesus did not begin to exist when He was born of Mary. The eternal Son entered human history and took upon Himself a true human nature. He remained fully God while becoming fully man.

When Thomas saw the risen Christ, he addressed Him plainly:

“My Lord and my God.”[[/quote]]

John 20:28, KJV

Jesus did not correct Thomas for blasphemy because Thomas had spoken the truth. Jesus possesses the authority of God, receives worship, forgives sins, gives eternal life, and declares that He existed before Abraham.

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”[[/quote]]

The deity of Christ is not a secondary issue. If Jesus were merely a created being, He could not reveal the Father perfectly or bear the full judgment of God against sin. Our salvation rests upon the truth that the One who died for us is God the Son who became man.

## The Holy Ghost Is God

The Holy Ghost is not an impersonal force, religious feeling, or spiritual energy. He is a divine Person. He speaks, teaches, guides, commands, can be grieved, and acts according to His own will.

When Ananias lied about the money he had received from selling property, Peter told him that he had lied to the Holy Ghost. Peter then said that he had lied to God.

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?”[[/quote]]

“Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”[[/quote]]

The Holy Ghost inspired Scripture, convicts the world of sin, gives spiritual life, indwells believers, distributes spiritual gifts, and seals those who belong to Christ. He is not less divine than the Father or the Son.

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”[[/quote]]

2 Corinthians 3:17, KJV

## Three Distinct Persons

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one God, but they are not the same Person appearing under different names. The Father did not become the Son, and the Son did not later become the Holy Ghost. Scripture shows them acting distinctly and relating to one another.

The baptism of Jesus gives us one of the clearest pictures:

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”[[/quote]]

Matthew 3:16–17, KJV

The Son is standing in the water. The Holy Ghost descends upon Him. The Father speaks from heaven. This is not one Person rapidly changing costumes. All three Persons are present and acting distinctly at the same moment.

Jesus also commanded His disciples to baptize converts in one name shared by three Persons:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”[[/quote]]

Jesus said “name,” not “names.” There is one divine name and one God, yet the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are each included.

## Equal in Deity, Distinct in Their Work

The three Persons of the Trinity are equal in divine nature, glory, power, and eternity. The Son is not less God than the Father. The Holy Ghost is not less God than the Son. There has never been a time when the Father existed without the Son or the Holy Ghost.

Yet Scripture also shows distinction in their work. The Father sent the Son. The Son willingly came, took on human flesh, and died for sinners. The Holy Ghost applies the work of Christ to believers, gives spiritual life, and dwells within them. These distinctions do not imply that one Person is more divine than another. They reveal perfect unity in the work of God.

At the cross, the Son offered Himself to the Father through the eternal Spirit:

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”[[/quote]]

Our salvation is the work of the Triune God. The Father planned redemption, the Son accomplished it, and the Holy Ghost applies it to those who believe.

## The Trinity Is Not a Contradiction

Christians are sometimes accused of believing that God is one and three in the same sense. That would be a contradiction, but it is not what the doctrine teaches. God is one in Being and three in Person. We are not saying that one God equals three gods or that one Person equals three persons.

God’s nature is greater than ours. We should expect the eternal Creator to exceed the full understanding of creatures. Mystery is not the same as nonsense. We may not comprehend everything about God, but we can understand what He has revealed and speak truthfully within the boundaries of Scripture.

The Trinity should make us humble. We are not masters standing over God and demanding that He fit within our minds. We are creatures receiving what the Creator has chosen to reveal about Himself.

“Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?”[[/quote]]

## Why Common Analogies Fail

People often use water, eggs, the sun, or human roles to explain the Trinity. These comparisons may sound helpful at first, but they usually distort the doctrine.

Water can exist as liquid, ice, or vapor, but that suggests one Person changing between three forms. That is not the Trinity. A man may be a father, son, and husband, but that also describes one person performing three roles. An egg has a shell, white, and yolk, but each part is only a portion of the whole. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not three forms, roles, or pieces of God.

Creation can sometimes give us faint reminders of its Creator, but nothing in creation perfectly explains the Trinity. We should not force God into an illustration that makes Him easier to manage while making the doctrine false. It is better to use the language of Scripture and admit the limits of our understanding.

## Why the Trinity Matters

The Trinity is not an abstract puzzle for theologians to argue about. It stands at the center of the gospel and shapes how Christians understand salvation, prayer, worship, and the love of God.

The Father sent the Son because He loved the world. The Son willingly gave Himself for sinners. The Holy Ghost convicts us of sin, causes us to be born again, and lives within everyone who belongs to Christ. Through the Son, by the Spirit, believers are brought into fellowship with the Father.

“For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”[[/quote]]

Without the Trinity, the gospel falls apart. If Jesus is not God, His death cannot provide the sufficient sacrifice Scripture promises. If the Holy Ghost is not God, He cannot give us spiritual life or unite us to Christ. If there is no distinction between the Father and the Son, then the Father sending the Son and the Son praying to the Father become meaningless performances.

The Christian faith stands upon the truth that the one God saves sinners as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

## The Trinity Reveals That God Is Love

Scripture tells us that God is love. This does not mean that God became loving only after He created someone to love. Before creation existed, the Father loved the Son, the Son loved the Father, and the Holy Ghost shared eternally in the perfect fellowship of God.

Jesus prayed:

“Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.”[[/quote]]

John 17:24, KJV

God did not create humanity because He was lonely or incomplete. The Triune God has always possessed perfect life, fellowship, and love within Himself. Creation adds nothing that God lacked. Salvation is not God attempting to fill an emptiness in Himself. It is the overflow of His grace toward people who have rebelled against Him.

## False Teachings About God Must Be Rejected

Some groups use Christian language while denying the Trinity. They may call Jesus the Son of God but claim that He was created. Others teach that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are simply different names or appearances of one Person. Islam rejects the deity and Sonship of Christ. Other religious movements speak of multiple gods or teach that human beings may eventually become gods themselves.

These teachings cannot be reconciled with Scripture. Sincerity does not turn falsehood into truth. Using the name of Jesus does not make a doctrine Christian if the Jesus being presented is not the eternal Son revealed in the Bible.

“Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father.”[[/quote]]

We must speak with patience and treat people with dignity, but we cannot surrender the truth about God in order to avoid disagreement. A false understanding of Christ leads to a false gospel, and a false gospel cannot save.

## Salvation Is the Work of the Triune God

The doctrine of the Trinity brings us to the gospel. The Father sent His Son into the world because we could not save ourselves. The Son took upon Himself human flesh, lived without sin, and died on the cross under the judgment our sins deserved. The Holy Ghost convicts us, opens our understanding to the truth, and gives new life to those who believe.

“But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”[[/quote]]

You are not saved merely by understanding the Trinity or agreeing with a doctrinal statement. You must personally come to Jesus Christ.

Recognize that you are a sinner in need of God’s grace. Admit that you cannot save yourself. Believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, that He died for your sins, and that He rose bodily from the grave. Ask Christ to forgive your sins, come into your heart, and save you. Turn from your sin and place your faith in Him as Lord and Savior.

You may pray:

Lord Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner and need Your grace. I believe that You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins, and that You rose from the dead. Please forgive me, come into my heart, and save me. I turn from my sin and place my faith in You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

A prayer does not save because the words have power by themselves. Jesus Christ saves those who come to Him in repentance and faith.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”[[/quote]]

The Father has sent the Son. The Son has paid the price for sin. The Holy Ghost calls sinners to repentance and gives life to those who believe. There is one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. He alone is worthy of our worship, obedience, and trust.
