Who Is the Holy Spirit?

## The Central Question

Who is the Holy Spirit, and what does Scripture teach about His work in the life of the believer?

The Holy Spirit is not merely a force, an energy, a feeling, an emotional experience, intuition, a spiritual atmosphere, a supernatural power believers learn to manipulate, the source of every internal impression, or a means of drawing attention to spiritual personalities.

The Holy Spirit is personal. The Holy Spirit is divine. His ministry points people toward Jesus Christ and works consistently with the truth God has revealed in Scripture.

## The Promise of the Comforter

As Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure, He gave them a profound promise in John 14:16–17:

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.[[quote]]

We must not reduce the word “Comforter” merely to emotional comfort. The word carries a wider sense of Helper, Advocate, and One who comes alongside to strengthen and guide.

## The Holy Spirit Is a Person

Scripture does not speak of the Holy Spirit as an impersonal spiritual substance or energy. The Spirit teaches, guides, speaks, intercedes, distributes gifts, bears witness, and can be grieved.

Jesus declared in John 14:26:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall teach you all things...[[quote]]

And the Apostle Paul warns in Ephesians 4:30:

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God...[[quote]]

This language matters. You can only grieve a person. We do not merely use the Spirit as a power source; we live before and respond to a divine Person.

## The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit is fully divine. We see this clearly in Acts 5:3–4, when Peter confronts Ananias for his deception. Peter asks why Satan has filled Ananias’s heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and then concludes: “thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”

This is not built on one verse alone. It connects with the broader biblical teaching of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When Christ commissioned His disciples in Matthew 28:19, He commanded:

...baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.[[quote]]

Historic Christianity confesses one God and recognizes Father, Son, and Holy Spirit within the biblical revelation of God's being.

## The Holy Spirit Glorifies Christ

One of the governing principles of the Holy Spirit’s ministry is that He brings glory to Jesus Christ. Jesus stated in John 16:13–14:

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth... He shall glorify me...[[quote]]

The ministry of the Holy Spirit does not compete with Jesus Christ. The Spirit directs attention toward Christ.

This provides an important test for spiritual teaching. If a supposed spiritual experience consistently magnifies the personality of the speaker, sensational phenomena, spiritual status, or personal power while Christ becomes secondary, something has gone wrong.
