Suffering? Why?

The Severe Mercy of a Sovereign God

Darrell Eugene Harlow-Curtis

When your life caves in—when the diagnosis is terminal, when the marriage shatters, or when the casket is lowered into the ground—the first thing the human soul screams is, *"Why?"*

We demand an explanation. We want God to hand us a spreadsheet detailing exactly why our pain was necessary. We assume that if God truly loved us, He would bubble-wrap our lives and shield us from every devastating blow. We have bought into the lie that a blessed life is a pain-free life.

But a pain-free life usually produces a spiritually dead soul.

We live in a fractured, cursed, and degenerate world; pain is the baseline of the human condition. But for the believer, suffering is never pointless. In the hands of a sovereign God, suffering is a forge. It is the only fire hot enough to burn away our arrogance, our self-reliance, and our dangerous love for this temporary world.

God will ruthlessly crush your comfort if it is the only way to save your soul. That is not abuse; that is a severe mercy. He breaks the outer shell of our lives so the actual life of Christ can bleed through. You cannot produce olive oil without crushing the olive. You cannot purify gold without throwing it into the fire.

The most profound comfort in suffering is not finding the answer to "Why?" The answer rarely brings peace. The true comfort is looking at the cross. Jesus Christ did not stand on the edge of heaven shouting religious platitudes at our pain. He stepped into the dirt, took on a frail human body, and suffered the most brutal, agonizing death imaginable.

We serve a God with scars. He does not just explain our suffering; He joins us in the furnace.

Stop demanding an explanation and start demanding His presence. Your pain is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It is the very tool He is using to detach you from a dying world and prepare you for an eternal weight of glory.
