When Mothers Kill Their Own Children
Calling It a Choice Does Not Make the Child Less Dead.
There is no clean way to say this. A mother who chooses an elective abortion chooses that her unborn child will not continue living. The words surrounding the decision may sound softer. The outcome is not.
People call it a procedure, reproductive care, or the ending of a pregnancy. Medical words can be accurate, but they can also be used to keep us from looking directly at what happened. A pregnancy does not end by itself during an abortion. A living child dies.
The law may not call every abortion murder. Politicians may avoid the word. A clinic may describe the child as tissue. None of that settles the moral question. Governments can give an action legal protection without making it right before God.
“Thou shalt not kill” remains in the Bible (Exodus 20:13).
## God Sees the Child in the Womb
Scripture does not speak about the unborn child as a worthless object.
David wrote, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13). He continued, “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect” (Psalm 139:16). David understood that God saw him before anyone else could.
God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee” (Jeremiah 1:5). That verse speaks about Jeremiah’s calling as a prophet, but the truth is still plain. Jeremiah was known by God before his birth.
When the pregnant Mary visited Elizabeth, John responded from inside Elizabeth’s womb. Elizabeth said, “The babe leaped in my womb for joy” (Luke 1:44). Scripture calls him a baby. He was hidden from human sight, but he was alive before God.
A child does not become valuable when the mother wants him. He does not become human when a doctor delivers him. His location does not decide his worth.
The womb should be the first safe place a child knows. It should not become his grave.
## Society Has Taught Mothers to Fear Their Own Children
Many women do not walk into abortion clinics laughing. They are afraid. Some have been abandoned by the child’s father. Some fear losing their education, job, home, or family. Some have been pressured by parents or boyfriends. Some have been told that a child will destroy every plan they have.
That fear is real. The answer being sold to them is still wrong.
Our culture tells a frightened woman that killing her child will return her life to normal. It does not tell her that she may remember the decision long after everyone else has moved on. It tells her that abortion is freedom, then leaves her alone with whatever grief, doubt, or guilt may follow.
That is not compassion. It is abandonment dressed in respectable language.
Real compassion does not force a woman to choose between her future and her child. It helps her find housing, food, medical care, safety, education, employment, and people who will stay after the child is born. Christians who speak loudly against abortion but disappear when a struggling mother needs help are defending truth with their mouths while denying it with their actions.
James asked, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,” what good does it do to offer kind words without meeting the need (James 2:15–16)? The same question applies here. Telling a woman to keep her child while refusing to help her carry the burden is cheap religion.
The child must not be killed. The mother must not be abandoned.
## Fathers Do Not Get to Walk Away Clean
Men are often missing from the public argument about abortion, but they are not missing from the guilt.
Some men pressure women to abort because they do not want responsibility. Some offer to pay for the abortion but will not pay for diapers. Some threaten to leave. Others disappear as soon as the pregnancy becomes inconvenient.
A man who helps create a child and then pushes the mother to kill that child is not innocent because he never entered the clinic. He is using the woman’s body to escape the consequences of his own actions.
There are also fathers who beg for their children’s lives and are told they have no voice. Their grief is rarely mentioned because it does not fit the political story. They lose a child they wanted and are expected to remain silent.
Responsibility belongs wherever pressure, money, lies, abandonment, and selfishness helped produce the decision. The mother may make the final choice, but she is not always the only person standing behind it.
## Children Are Still Being Sacrificed
In Jeremiah’s day, people built places where their children were burned as offerings. God said this was something “which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart” (Jeremiah 7:31).
We should not pretend modern abortion is identical in every detail to those ancient sacrifices. It is not. But the excuse underneath it is familiar. An innocent child dies so that someone older can protect something he or she values more.
Ancient people used religion to justify it. Modern people use words such as freedom, choice, success, and convenience. The language changed. The child still paid the price.
Proverbs 24:11 commands, “If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain.” The next verse warns that saying we did not know will not fool God. He sees the heart.
Silence is easier. It is not innocent.
## What About Rape, Medical Emergencies, and Miscarriage?
Rape is evil. The woman who was attacked did not choose what happened to her. She deserves protection, patient care, justice, and people who will not treat her pain like a political argument.
The rapist is guilty. The child is not.
That does not make the situation simple. It makes it terrible. Christians must speak carefully because slogans are cheap when someone else is carrying the trauma. Protecting the child must include caring for the mother. She should never be treated as though her fear does not matter.
This article is not condemning a woman who suffers a miscarriage. A miscarriage is the loss of a child, not a mother choosing to kill one. Medical care after a child has died in the womb is not the same moral act as elective abortion.
There are also dangerous pregnancies in which doctors must act to save life. Those cases require honest medical facts and careful moral judgment. They should not be dismissed with a slogan, and they should not be used as cover for abortions chosen simply because a living child is unwanted.
The difference involves the truth about what happened, what was intended, and whose life the doctors were trying to save. God knows that difference even when political arguments refuse to make it.
## The Church Must Stop Shouting From a Safe Distance
It is easy to condemn abortion from a church pew. It costs nothing to post a verse and go home.
If the church says children are a gift from God, then the church should help mothers feed them. If Christians demand that babies be born, then Christians should care about what happens after birth. That includes helping women escape abuse, supporting adoption and foster care, assisting fathers who are trying to remain present, and standing beside families whose children have disabilities.
Psalm 127:3 says, “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord.” That verse does not apply only to healthy children born into stable homes. It applies to the child whose arrival is frightening, expensive, badly timed, or unwanted by everyone except God.
A church that protects the unborn child but humiliates the pregnant mother has missed part of its duty. A church that comforts the mother by denying the child’s life has abandoned the truth.
We are required to hold both.
## Can a Mother Be Forgiven After an Abortion?
Yes.
Abortion is not greater than the blood of Jesus Christ.
Forgiveness does not come by pretending nothing happened. It begins when we stop hiding behind softer words and confess the truth to God. First John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
David arranged the death of Uriah and tried to cover it. When God confronted him, David finally confessed, “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13). David was forgiven, although the consequences of his sin did not disappear.
A woman who has chosen abortion does not need Christians standing over her as if they have never needed mercy. She needs the truth, repentance, and the grace of Christ. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”
God’s forgiveness does not call the abortion good. It declares that Christ’s sacrifice is strong enough to forgive the sinner who turns to Him.
Repentance means the excuses stop. Grief may remain. The child cannot be brought back in this life. Yet the mother does not have to spend the rest of her life running from God. She can come into the light, receive forgiveness, and allow God to use her testimony to protect other women and children.
## Final Verdict
Elective abortion intentionally ends the life of an innocent unborn child. Calling it a choice, procedure, or legal right does not change what happens to the child. Before God, innocent blood still matters.
The mother bears responsibility when she freely chooses abortion, but she may not bear it alone. The father who pressured her, the family that threatened her, the clinic that profited, the politician who lied, and the church that refused to help may all have blood on their hands.
This truth should never be used as permission to hate women. Hatred does not defend life. Threats do not serve Christ. A person cannot claim to value God’s image in the unborn child while despising God’s image in the mother.
The Christian answer is plain: protect the child, help the mother, confront the father, tell the truth, and preach forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
A child does not deserve death because his arrival creates fear. A mother does not need another lie because the truth hurts. She needs people willing to stand beside her before the decision, after the birth, and even after a terrible choice has already been made.
God does not endorse the killing of children.
We should stop asking Him to approve it.
